The fire was reported in the National Forest south of the city off the Beartooth Highway about 1.5 miles south of Rock Creek Resort.
The Beartooth Highway, U.S. Highway 212, which connects Red Lodge to Cooke City and the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park, is scheduled to open for the season at 9 a.m. Friday.
